I just wanted to make the point that when you visit sites that post mathematics, you immediately see that GIFs are ubiquitous. There was originally a plan to integrate mathematical notation into HTML itself, but this went by the wayside, and the only really practical interim solution, practiced nearly universally, is GIF images. The second most common choice is PDF files, which tend to be rather large for their content, and cannot be viewed by any visitor.
