The bug appears also to occur in version 4.0.1.0. I am a Premier
subscriber, and have received the 4.1 upgrade but have not installed
it yet.

I played a little with variations of your problem using v4.0, for
example:

Integrate[1-x^a,{x,0,1}]/.a->-0.9

and the problem persists, as I expected. I suspect you've done the
same using v4.1.

I have owned Mathematica for a couple of years, but so far I am not a
frequent user. So, there could be something more sophisticated to
try, for example treating it as a limit problem. This is certainly
worth tracking down, and I'm glad you found it.

Thankfully, I've kept my earlier versions including 3.0.

I'm also going to post a note that it APPEARS that the books that come
with the 4.1 upgrade are actually just the 4.0 books. That's based on
a couple of examinations based on the 4.1 changes posted on Wolfram's
web site.
