Here is what I do.

1. Follow the menu path Input>Create Table/Matrix/Palette and choose Table
with the appropriate number of lines and 3 columns (4 to add comments).

2. lhs in first box, equal sign in second, rhs in third. A space
effectively makes a box disappear.

3. Select the cell bracket and: Format>Option Inspector>Formatting
Options>Table/Matrix/Palette Formatting>Column Options and set
ColumnAlignments to Left.

There is an alignment marker character but I find the above sufficient for
my needs.
