Dear Mathematica Users,

I think most of us, at one time or other, struggle with cross-platform
issues and copy-paste problems between applications, e.g. between
Mathematica and MS Word.

I thought it might be useful to relate my experiences in the form of 2
Hints:

Configuration:
I use the X-Server Exceed on Windows NT to access & run Mathematica on
UNIX.
I have the Mathematica fonts installed on my local NT machine.
I have MathReader (but don't expect anyone receiving my files will
have it).

Hint 1: To create a PDF file.
After extensive experimentation, this is the only reliable method I
have found that will produce a truly portable PDF file for
distribution and printing.
1. Save the Notebook in UNIX Mathematica, using the excellent
brackets&breaks.nb Notebook from the Wolfram MathGroup Archive (1998)
to set up the page breaks as you like.
2. Open the Notebook in MathReader on Windows and then print to a file
using a Postscript printer driver.
3. Open the resulting Postscript file using Windows GSView (free for
download at http://www.ghostscript.com/) and then use the "Convert..."
menu command to convert it to PDF using the pdfwrite driver.
4. Print and/or distribute the PDF file with impunity.

Hint 2: To Paste into MS Word.
Again, this seems to be to only method to produce portable files.
1. Open the Notebook in MathReader.
2. Copy the cell you want.
3. Paste As...Device Independent Bitmap into MS Word.
4. For good measure, save with Fonts embedded (Tools->Options->Save).

Just goes to show how handy MathReader is.

I hope that these two hints might save someone else a lot of bother!

Regards,
Brett Patterson
