I am responsible for our departmental computer lab and I'm having a little trouble getting everything to work just right. We have Mathematica v3 running on Macintosh G4s, Mac OS 9.2.1. I use Assimilator in the lab, so every machine is set back to the same files and settings at the end of the day. However, some of the machines refuse to run Mathematica without reentering the password every time. This is despite the fact that I have identical copies of all the Mathematica preference files (in fact, of *all* Mathematica files) on every machine. My question: What does Mathematica check against the prefs file? Perhaps I have some modification dates wrong or something like that that's easily fixed. And yes, we have licenses for all the copies of Mathematica that we use. I just want students to be able to come to the lab and use Mathematica without them having to know the password (a no-brainer). Thanks, -Ben Lotto (Associate Professor of Mathematics, Vassar College)
