Hmmm...RAM is pretty cheap now, but anyway, try looking in the Help files for Memory Management, and Utilities`MemoryConserve`. As for Linux in general, I am not a Linux guru by any means, but later versions of the 2.4 kernel have an entirely new virtual memory manager. (See http://www.byte.com/documents/s=1436/byt20011024s0002/1029_moshe.html ) which is supposed to be much better. (Not surprisingly the old VM creator disagrees http://linux.html.it/articoli/rik_van_riel_en1.htm .) Of course FullSimplify can be very memory intensive...perhaps you can do all the simplifications first, save the results, restart the Mathematica kernel and continue the calculations?
