No. That's not the point. Mathematica help says:

<<$Path gives the default list of directories to search in attempting to 
find an external file.>>

Giving the whole path to the Import function doesn't help. 

The problem was, that the 4.1 frontend was running a 3.x kernel. So it 
couldn't work *grrr*. It tooked me hour's to find out.
