If you only need to use the file with Mathematica, then the best way is to 
use the "Dump" format.

Export["file", data, "Dump"] to write the file.
data = Import["file", "Dump"] to read the file.

"Dump" uses a binary form to save the data. If you prefer ASCII, you can 
use the "Expression" format.
