You're right ... and you might like to see what happens when you restart
Mathematica after you've got your PowerPoint picture with all the @'s ....

The workaround I use is to paste as Bitmaps rather than WMF's.  This suites
me because I usually need to edit them in some way.  After editing, I can
cut, & re-paste as JPG's or whatever-the-hell MS' "picture" format is, to
reduce the size of the PowerPoint.
