You could use ContourPlot3D. The following code gives something like what
you want:

a=5;
r=5;
ContourPlot3D[(2x^2+y^2+z^2-1)^3-a*x^2*z^3-y^2*z^3,{x,-r,r},{y,-r,r},{z,-r,
      2r},PlotPoints\[Rule]{10,10}];
