As it has a cusp at x=0, better to write as
Plot[ {(x^2)^(1/3)},{x, -1, 1}]; 
as roots are reported in counter-clockwise direction 
with respect to x-axis in Argand diagram, try 
Re[-(1)^(1/3)] and Im[-(1)^(1/3)] to capture the real root.
