FONT PROBLEM, SuSe Linux 7.3 Mathematica 4.0 FrontEnd

Hello 

I fear that this is a FAQ but after a couple of hours unsuccessfully
searching, I dare to post the question in  the forum (sorry when i
missed an obvious FAQ entry).

When I type some charachters into the Mathematica FrontEnd I only get empty
boxes instead of the typed characters. This effect came up when I
updated to SuSe Linux 7.3.
I already followed some bugfixes. I corrected the "MaxForXListFonts"
line in the file "Specific.tr". The "wri" fonts can be seen with
"xlsfonts" furthermore the fontpath countains links to the "Type1" and
"X" directories. However, the problem still persists.

Is there any instruction in the web which describes a solution for the
problem?
