You can write things like that really easily in plain Mathematica:

Mandel[c_] := Module[{x = 0, i = 0},
    While[i < 100 \[And] Abs[x] < 4,
      x = x^2 + c;
      i = i + 1];
    Return[i]]

DensityPlot[Mandel[x + I y], {x, -2, 1}, {y, -1, 1}, PlotPoints -> 100, 
  Mesh -> False]
