As the Publicon lead developer I'll be trying my best to respond to Publicon-related posts as time permits. Regarding footnotes, the ideal scenario is to support both endnotes and footnotes, but since our notebook-based interface follows a scrolling paradigm (like HTML browsers), footnotes are simply not viable. However, notes can be inserted in such a way that they are converted as footnotes in LaTeX, separately from endnotes inserted in the same document. The APS format offers an example of that. Conversion to Publicon from Mathematica is not necessarily a one way street, but the most useful features in Publicon are not in Mathematica yet. We certainly plan to integrate these features into Mathematica in the future. The learning curve for Publicon is inarguably less intimidating than for LaTeX. A new user is not learning a new language to typeset some math in Publicon. Of course, once you get "under the hood" in order to customize things, there is no choice but to expose the user to some amount of Mathematica syntax which could be a bit daunting to novices but not to anyone on this group. I agree that pagination and other aspects of print production based on notebook technology are more limited than with page layout applications. Until these features are expanded, we will continue presenting Publicon as a tool primarily for the composition of structured electronic technical documents. Gary Helzer asked about documentation. I can point to Publicon's complete documentation online here: http://documents.wolfram.com/publicon/ The documentation contains task-based examples, but stand-alone tutorials and white papers are pending. Please make suggestions to me about specific areas that could use enhancement, such as palette, style sheet, and LaTeX conversion customization, or customization of reference types, etc. I also hope all TeX conversion bugs will be reported directly to us, as we plan to do an update soon which could perhaps remedy any that might be fairly trivial.
