File association in 5.01

Folks,

I've recently upgraded to v. 5.01 from v. 5 and now my saved notebooks 
(xxx.nb) are no longer recognized by Mathematica. I've tried the standard 
file association steps to no avail (I'm using Windows XP, home edition)

Has anyone had a similar experience and, more importantly, can anyone figure 
out what dumb mistake I'm making here?
