I have had good luck with:

a) select the desired image
b) edit
c) copy as
d) bitmap
e) paste into Word document

If one adjusts the image after it has been copied into word, clarity of the
image can suffer moderately to severely.  The trick is to ensure you have
the image the correct size you want in Mathematica before copying and
pasting it elsewhere.
