Matt, If you care to try out the DrawGraphics package at my web site below, I have a Legend example in the Help that shows how to use legends with curves produced by various types of plots. However I think that legends are often a poor graphical device. They usually end up being too large and too dominant and therefore detract from the main graphics message you are trying to convey. Often it might be simpler and clearer to directly label curves with Text statements. With DrawGraphics you could also construct your own psuedo-legends simply by adding lines and Text statements directly to the plot. That is usually much easier to control and gets rid of the box and shadow and all the other 'computer junk'. The Mathematica Legend construction is very tricky to control.
