You can run 5.0 and 5.1 just fine.  The 5.1 versions of the Mathematica 
fonts are a superset of the 5.0 (and 4.2) versions.  Specifically, every 
glyph that existed in the 5.0 fonts exists in exactly the same position in 
the 5.1 fonts, but the 5.1 fonts contain new glyphs, including the ones I 
mentioned below.
