i've just installed mm 5.0 under gentoo linux 2.6.8, xorg 6.7.0, gnome 2.6
on an i686.

when i open the graphical frontend, i am able to type text, but
<shift-enter> doesnt evaluate the cell. <enter> creates a new cell. if the
window loses focus, clicking within the frontend doesnt regain focus and
the mouse appears as a hand and not the horizontal cursor. furthermore,
<backspace> and <delete> produce little boxes. in fact, none of the
control sequences work. the console frontend works, though.

i've checked under Help->X Environment Info->Find keys... to see if i need
to remap keys with xmodmap but all keys and control sequences seem to map
correctly. nothings seems to be odd with KeyEventTranslations.tr or
MenuSetup.tr. couldnt find anything in wolfram's technical faq. another
recent post (http://tinyurl.com/42knb) had a similar problem with no
response.

any tips on where to look would be appreciated.

thanks,
andrew.
