Steve...

I don't ever recall seeing any kind of explanation either from Mathgroup
or Wolfram why files 'corrupt'. I have used Wolfram's suggestions on it
but I have never gotten back the file I had to begin with....just some
kind of a copy of it that is useable but far from what I really
wanted... One thing that I have done to avoid this problem is the
following:

...save the file as is , i.e. with outputs, etc...

....close the file

.....re-open it...

....if it re-opens with no problem, then I delete all output and re-save
it as a *_BUP.nb file

Since I've done this I havent had any problems....however, I don't know
if this is just luck or actually has technical merit'...my assumption is
that a file with many output cells has a greater chance of
'corrupting'...

I should have first looked up "corrupt file" in the Mathematica archive,
which gives directions for loading a corrupted file. I did what it said,
which did not quite work, but modifying the procedure gave me a version
of my notebook. That version will not execute, but at least it's in
readable form, and I can see what new features it has and even
copy/paste sections from it into a new notebook. If anyone wants
details, e-mail me or say so here and I will redo the process. Thanks in
advance to anyone who responds.
