"somewhat user-hostile interface"??? In what respect?

Are you confusing the "interface", i.e., the front end -- with the vast 
array of built-in functions available in the kernel?

Intelligent interaction with the front end is something I routinely 
teach my undergraduates in an hour (along with lots of stuff about the 
capabilities of the kernel).
