Comments are extraordinarily buggy in Mathematica. Have been since I've 
been using the tool about 8 years ago. For some reason they just don't 
have high on their list of things to fix.

In general, anything other than your plain vanilla executable code, such 
as comments or colored fonts or other stylistic variations will subject 
you to random, hard to trace bugs like you just found.
