Folks,

I was excited to find a Wolfram Research page geared towards helping
users set up a remote kernel via SSH under Windows:

http://support.wolfram.com/networkmathematica/systems/windows/remote.html

I have a relatively quick windows box that I would love to use
remotely. The machine has an SSH server on it (Bitvise's WinSSHD)
which I have configured as outlined (i.e. I can log in to the machine
remotely without problems, have arranged the keypairs, etc.). However,
when I actually try to fire up a remote kernel from inside mathematica,
it fails to work (note that I can do if from the command line via ssh
without a problem).

After messing around with the kerel configuration options, I am fairly
certain the problem is either in the sequence of mathlink commands used
to launch the kernel or in the arguments to MLOpen (which are not
mentioned in the above web page). Did the author of the above web page
actually get this to work under Mathematica 5.1?

Has anyone done this successfully under windows? If so, could you give
me a bit more insight into how to make it work than the above web page
offers?

As an aside, any comments on how the remote kernel connection issue in
general might be addressed in future editions of Mathematica? For such
a capable and user friendly computational environment, this aspect of
Mathematica seems a bit archaic to me - but I am part of the "post
command line" generation and am propbably a bit GUI spoiled. I would
be interested in what others have to say about the matter.
