Well, Mathematica once worked, then later failed. So, the as-received Mathematica
electrons are not the problem. Something suffered some damage
afterwards, something that isn't replaced by an ordinary install. I'm
assuming that the computer itself didn't change in *any* way (however
"minor").

The standard dodges are:

In the Kernel menu, ask that all output be discarded, and kill the
kernel. Also clear all caches. Then re-evaluate the notebook.

Failing that, nuke all Mathematica prefs files.

Failing that, manually build a new notebook with samples of the desired
functions, the ones that now fail. Do *not* cut and paste from any
other source. Type it all in by hand. Does the sample now work? If
yes, something is odd about the original notebook. If not, something
damaged escaped. Find and delete *all* of Mathematica, and reinstall.

If the above doesn't work, upgrade to Mathematica 5.

If that doesn't work, come to Wolfram HQ, and commit suicide on their
doorstep.
