Our group runs 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 5.1 on WinXP (about 10 users). All of us get occasional crashes, usually when running huge notebooks (i.e. thousands of lines and many 'MB' of variables). Only affects Mathematica itself though, not other applications. As with all software: save often. I won't get into any religious wars over Linux, WinXP or Mac - our experience of Mathematica on these platforms is that Mathematica runs kind of the same on all of them - no more crashes on one rather than another.
