The  normal installation procedure is:

Log in as administrator (on a xp home edition in protected mode ). 
Install Mathematica. Give grade up users rights to administrators group. 
Restart computer als user. Start Mathematica. Log off. Login as 
adminstrator and downgrade users rights to original status.

Hanging the system results from the bad habit of Mathematica not 
respecting the systems rights hierarchy in case of errors or use of 
registry.
