I certainly encounter a lot of people that want to use Mathematica as a 
'souped up calculator'. What I always stress to them is that that is 
fine if they gradually build a tool box of bits of code that help them 
in whatever they are working on. This might be as simple as a few 
variables set to lists of useful transformation rules - which can then 
be applied with much less effort, or a few definitions that make it 
possible to access a neat notation of some sort.

People who just use Mathematica raw each time they run it, probably 
don't get much out of the system, find it clumsy, and move on to 
something else. Of course, in doing so, they have made a very bad mistake!
