Probably the most correct answer to your question is no. But there are cases where it may be possible to get something close to what you are asking for.

For any function you create, it is clearly possible to add Print statements at points to see how things progress. Also, there is the Trace function. And some of the built-in functions have provisions for the output of intermediate state information.

But in general for built-in functions such as say Integrate, there is no way to see what is being done by Mathematica to arrive at the final answer.
