Mr. Graber,

It shouldn't be that different.  If you don't have a paper copy
of the Getting Started booklet, check the web version at
http://documents.wolfram.com/mathematica/GettingStarted/.
There is a Troubleshooting section at
http://documents.wolfram.com/mathematica/GettingStarted/System- 
SpecificInformation/Troubleshooting/TroubleshootingOnUnixLinux.html

By any chance, does the cursor look like a hand?  If the Mod2 key
(usually NumLock) is set, behavior is different.  See

with a description and what you've tried.  Does the bare kernel (math)
