It would help if you would post a specific example. I just now tried 
computing the MatrixRank on some matrices of random integers, and it was 
pretty much instantaneous for an 8 by 8 matrix, and took less than a 
second for a 100 by 100 matrix. This is on a 5-year-old Pentium 4 (2 
GHz, 512 MB RAM).
