Afterthought:

The problem may be that while editing, one is creating intermediate
expressions that aren't syntactically valid (or are syntactically
valid, but with a different meaning to the one that you want when
you've finished editing).  So then, maybe, the layout/syntax
highlighter adjusts the input expression on the basis of the
intermediate meaning (or lack of meaning - getting ready to highlight
the first syntax error).

So perhaps one remedy is to turn off syntax highlighting? (Haven't
tried, can't remember offhand how to do it!)
