For 6.0.x use the Option Inspector (ctl-shift-O)
At the top of OI pick the window Show Option Values: Global Preferences
if you wish to turn off In/Out for all nb's for all time.
Then set: Cell Options -> Cell Labels -> ShowCellLabel ->False
