kernel running forever, network related(?)

dear Mathematica users,

i'm on mac os x 10.4.11

$Version
"6.0 for Mac OS X x86 (64-bit) (June 19, 2007)"

each time i try to evaluate:
$MachineDomains
or
$MachineAddresses,

the kernel keeps running without returning anything.

obviously SystemInformation["Network"] doesn't work either.

any help is apprecciated.
