Input slow in V6?

Hi,

I just installed Mathematica 6.0 on a machine with SuSE Linux 9.3. It seems 
that typing input into cells gets slower and slower the longer the cell. 
Typing into a new cell is very fast, but typing into a cell with, say, a 
hundred lines becomes very tedious (maybe 2 or three characters per 
second). Switching off syntax highlighting does not help. There was no such 
problem with 5.2. Any suggestions?
