substitute for $TextStyle in 6

Apologies if this has been covered before, but is there a simple way  
in Mathematica 6 to achieve the same *global* effect as setting  
$TextStyle->{stuff} in 5.2? I know that the new paradigm involves  
BaseStyle, but must it be applied using SetOptions *individually* to  
Plot, Plot3D, etc?
