Would the NotebookAutoSave option work for you?

http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/NotebookAutoSave.html

It saves the notebook after each evaluation, provided the notebook  
has been saved once already.

(NotebookAutoSave has been around for several versions.)
