align on equal signs with automatic equation numbering

Is there any way to have the front end do automatic equation numbering while preserving alignment on equal signs? Alignment on equal signs appears to require the equations to be in the same cell. Automatic numbering appears to require the equations to be in separate cells. -- http://chris.chiasson.name/
