Hi Axel,

The option *RotateLabel* should be what you are looking for. From the 
online help, "RotateLabel is an option for twoâ??dimensional graphics 
functions which specifies whether labels on vertical frame axes should 
be rotated to be vertical." For example,

In[1]:=
Plot[Sin[x], {x, -2*Pi, 2*Pi}, Frame -> True,
    FrameLabel -> {"x-axis",
      "This is the function sin x"},
    RotateLabel -> True];
