Use a frame.

Plot[x,{x,0,1},
    Frame->True,Axes\[Rule]False,
    FrameLabel->{"\nx","long y-axis label\n"},
    PlotLabel->"This is a long plot label\n"];

Alternatively, stack the words.

Plot[x,{x,0,1},
    AxesLabel->{"x"," long\ny-axis\n label"},
    PlotLabel->"This is a long\n  plot label\n"];
