Thanks for that - it has helped a lot! I feel sure that the new style 
sheet mechanism will be more effective than its predecessor because it 
is based on a hierarchy, but it really should have been properly 
documented by WRI!

The option inspector could help a lot. It would be really useful if it 
indicated exactly where in the hierarchy any given option is set. It 
would also help if there were a tool that could indicate the entire 
hierarchy of style sheets for a notebook and where each style is created 
and modified.

I discovered that you do not need to make a style visible in order to 
edit it. Simply choose a style that is visible, un-format it, and change 
its name. Using that method, I was able to make alterations to the 
"Notebook" style.

One other point - it would seem that it is a very BAD idea to carry over 
5.2 style sheets because they provide complete definitions for all 
styles and so mask certain new features.
