My PC is 32-bit too ("6.0 for Linux x86 (32-bit) (June 19, 2007)") but 

In[2]:= $MaxNumber

Out[2]= 1.9202246726923565854204690606`15.954589770191005*^646456887

   Could it be that the exponent is twice yours because this is a 
dual-processor machine? (Makes no sense to me)
