Mathematica 6.0.3 does not work on Gentoo/amd64

When I try to run Mathematica 6.0.3, it closes with a dynamic linking
error "symbol __gmpn_clz_tab not found".
The version of gmp that I have installed is 4.2.4 with mpbsd and c++
support. Grepping the object files (after compiling from source) shows
no entries for __gmpn_clz_tab.
Any suggestions?

My system:
os: Gentoo Linux, portage 20081019 ; linux 2.6.26.6-rt11 x86_64
cc: gcc-4.3 + libstdc++-v3 (for libstdc++.so.5)
libc: glibc-2.8-20080602
gmp: 4.2.4
