numbered figures

Hello,

is it possible to get automatically updating figure numbers? I tried
to use the menu item Insert->Automatic Numbering without success. What
I want to do is the following:

1. Draw figures in text cells
2. Insert figure captions Figure 1 some text ..., Figure 2 some other
text ... below the drawings.

The figure numbers should update automatically if a new figure is
inserted between two existing ones.
Furthermore, it should be possible to reference the figure numbers in
other places of the notebook, also with automatic updating of changed
figure numbers.

Here is what I tried in detail:

Create a text cell, invoke the drawing tool ctrl-d, draw something in
the text cell, select the text cell, change the cell type with alt-0 +
Figure, insert in the same cell in the line below the drawing an
automatic numbering object (menu item Insert->Automatic Numbering,
Counter type "Figure", check box "This counter object"). A zero (0) is
inserted always instead of 1, 2, 3 for different drawings in different
cells.
