Clustering (question)

Does anyone in the group understand the new HierarchicalClustering`
package?  I'm not asking about the Mathematica functions specifically,
I can learn that from the Doc Center.  I am curious about the
mathematics behind it all.  Can anybody suggest a textbook or article
that might help me understand this clustering mathematics and lingo,
written at a level that a understandable with a minor in
mathematics?   Is there a Schaum's Outline for clustering?
