mathematica@linux, character encoding

For some reason I can't get these two east-european characters printed
properly (to pdf) from the text-cell: ð and ¹. They are not shown in the
same font in "working screen environment", while they produce some mash
in "printout scr. env.".
Can someone try testing this sequence of characters "cèc cæc z¾z s¹s
dðd" (in a text cell) on his/her computer (copy&paste from here) and
see what's the output like.

All the options that I've tried in Global Option Inspector that were
related to fonts and encodings didn't help, some of them made things worse.

Since the $SystemCharacterEncoding command says "ISO8859-1", I should
maybe try to change something in Linux configuration, but I don't know
what...

Mathematica v. 7.0.1
Fedora Linux 11

Thanks,
pip
