It must have been a momentary (but reproducible at the time) quirk because after I relaunched Mathematica it worked as advertised. Still, it is disconcerting that it can happen without warning. I am running 8.01 on Lion. "8.01 for Mac OS X x86 (64-bit) (February 24, 2011)" Themis
