For me everything works as you and I expect. What exactly are you doing when "inserting a picture"? How do you initially open the notebook? My experiments tell me that Mathematica neither does change the current directory as you mentioned (when doing Insert -> Picture -> From File), nor does it save the notebook in a wrong folder when I save it afterwards... cheers, albert
