I've made a large output cell with "Expand[(1+x)^100] and entered "a+17
-mc^2" and every keystroke had an immediate effect.

This is Win7 HomePremium Sp1 64 Bit and Mathematica from February 2011
(8.0.1)

I tried it with Expand[(1+x)^1000] and got the same effect.
