Need to design digital filter

Is there a currently-maintained signals and systems package, or
perhaps a signal processing package?
Specifically, I have a need to design a few digital filters. I
definitely need Butterworth type and possibly elliptic type. But my
application is weird in that I need a low pass filter with a _very_
narrow passband, for which Octave generates unstable filters. I
suspect numerical problems and thus could possibly benefit from
Mathematica's ability to do symbolic computation and then compute the
numerical results with extra precision.
I will do the filtering in another (non-Mathematica) program--I need
only poles or coefficients for a cascade of second-order sections.
Thanks,
Jerry
