If you want Mathematica to use more than machine precision tell it so.

Precision[6371.01]

MachinePrecision

Precision[6371.01`20]

20.

b = 6371.01`20

6371.0100000000000000

SetPrecision[a = b, 20]

6371.0100000000000000
